What to Watch
7 May 2008Ok, Ive been thinking more about this subject of late, but I’d like to hear your thoughts. As a Christian is it wrong to watch movies that contain strong dark imagery or content? Where do the boundaries, if any start and end? Show and movies that show a lot of occult imagery, are you exposing yourself to something?

Harvey Dent
6 May 2008The latest Dark Knight trailer gave us a glimpse of Harvey Dent with possible scarring, well now there is a leaked image, which looks absolutely legit not to mention awesome. This testifies in my opinion how good Nolan is at this. Genius. Click here to see it.

Iron Man
3 May 2008Iron Man had the potential to not deliver what is a very strong basis of material. I got into Iron Man at the late end of my youth, but it almost made sense that as I was getting older I was moving onto a story about a womanizing alcoholic. This film could have been awkward because of our hero’s face being covered, this has in the past led to what can only be described as ‘Power Ranger Syndrome’. Iron Man delivered way more than I’d hoped. Only a couple of times did I notice slightly slow periods and they were corrected swiftly. The dialog is witty and well structured, the visual effects are great and it even challenges you with subtle social commentary. Robert Downey Jr. does very well in the role as does Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane. It never came over as cheesy or forced which is sadly where a lot of the comic movies let the viewer down. John Favreau has executed a very solid project and I hope we can see more of him tackling these kind of films. I would recommend it. If you do go and see it, what till the end of the credits, you won’t be sorry.

A DECADE OF UPPERCASE
30 April 2008Today in a meeting at work I made a realisation about my note-taking. In 98 I started work in London for The Salvation Army, I started to write my notes for things and did so in uppercase, after a while I had phased out using lowercase at all. So I sat today and tried to remember the last time I needed to use lowercase and other than, for a design element (thus forced) I haven’t in 10 years used lowercase handwriting. So I’m going to think about that a bit more, if it troubles me at all, who knows I’ll start practicing lowercase again.

VIVA LA VIDA
29 April 2008This is really well done artwork.
Coldplay elegantly uses ‘Liberty Leading the People’ by Delacroix, I think it’s a perfect choice.

Destined to be a nerd.
25 April 2008So, I was thinking about the roles of people in society and things that create the diversity we have, it got me thinking. I’ve never really been into sports, not just not interested in them, but generally not good at them too. It’s not an upbringing thing cos I remember Anita, my sister being good at Netball at school and my brother Lyndon is still actively involved in sports. Sport can separate a group almost immediately, the most obvious way would be opposing teams. But people who are passionate about sport will obviously have less in common with someone who just isn’t all that bothered by it.
That’s not to say they cannot be good friends, being in the US, a very sporting nation I would be very lonely if I did not have sport-enthused friends. What made me be who I am now though? My parents? Well yeah they contributed in a big way but if I think back to what interested me in my life I wonder if i’d made some different choices would everything be different or would I have arrived in the same place anyway.
When I was younger I can remember Lyndon and I going to the park and him being thoroughly annoyed at my lack of coordination, but he’s never given up on me, when we’ve ever been involved in sports together for what ever reason, he’s always pushed me and tried to help. Sadly it came to nothing. But given the choice to stay in and draw or go out to the park, I would have the majority of the time picked my pencils. I was drawn to where I knew I could succeed. Going and playing sports always left me disappointed, drawing something, and drawing it well left me feeling satisfied so I would stay in and do that more. At school, most of the guys would play football in the playground, and I would rather hang out with the girls and talk about stuff. What if I’d decided to make more of an effort to get good at the sports, to leave what I knew I was good at (drawing/art) to get better at something else as well, would I still be what I am know.
Who knows, one final discovery I made recently, when talking about shoe sizes with people, for my height I have quite small feet. I’m 5′10″ and my feet are UK size 8. Which for a skinny guy would maybe not matter, but my shape (which is my fathers shape too) is a more heavier/bulky frame up top. Maybe I’m not very coordinated and hence fall over more cos my are on the small side. I hear these proportions though are good for boxing and shotput. I don’t like the idea of either so I’ll just get my pencils thank you very much.

Great Scott
24 April 2008This past sunday we were dropping off Simon and Jo at the airport. Whilst they were checking their bags in I sat off to one side in some old worn armchairs. After a few minutes I hear an employee shout ‘Mr. Lloyd’, which for some reason I thought was for me so looked up ready to say ‘Yes?’ and although it was not for it was not a let down at all, for the employee was speaking to Christopher Lloyd the actor. I watched the Back to the Future films a LOT when I was younger so seeing him was very cool. As he walked by me with Evie strapped to me in a papoose and Elijah running round my feet, he smiled and nodded his head to me. He looks a little . . . weathered these days but still has crazy hair. Incidentally, he is the uncle of Sam Lloyd who plays Ted in Scrubs.
